Ski your heart out on 18 kilometers of expertly groomed ski trails for both classic and skating technique, or snowshoe on the Aspen Wilderness snowshoe trail. Relax next to the roaring fire at the Stone Turtle Day Lodge, where a menu of delicious, consciously-crafted food and drinks awaits. Rent modern ski and snowshoe equipment from friendly staff, who will teach you the basics of cross country skiing at no charge. You can also book a private lesson with a certified ski instructor, or join the weekly free beginner ski lesson on Saturdays at 10:30am. HISTORY
In the winter of 1974, Bob and Lynne Frye opened a small cross country ski rental business in a snowmobile shed at the Sports Barn, in Higgins Lake, Michigan. Three years later, they purchased the land next door and constructed a log-built home for Cross Country Ski Headquarters, and began selling cross country skis and clothing in addition to renting skisand developing ski trails on the adjoining state land. Driven by their passion for cross country skiing and outdoor fun, they expanded the building and their business several times over, to what is now a world class cross country ski shop and ski area. Today, there is a vast community of skiers and loyal customers across the country who call Cross Country Ski Headquarters “home,” and who appreciate the authenticity of this top-tier Nordic center, which is one of the only operations in the country that is a national-level retailer and an expertly groomed Nordic ski area, complete with full suite rental and lesson center, restaurant, and bar. Nothing beats the character of this truly unique and authentic place in beautiful Northern Michigan.
HISTORY
In 2016, Bob and Lynne’s daughter Mariah and her husband, Stu Colie, took over the business. They are committed to the same goal with which they started: get people outside and having fun in the wintertime.
