Cross Country Ski Report – Wednesday, Jan 8th

Kids 4H Cross Country Ski Headquarters

Greetings from Higgins Lake! The Trappers Cabin trail has full coverage with man-made snow, giving us about a 2km loop in great condition. It will be snowcombed this morning. All trails are open but ungroomed until we get about 2 more inches of snow. The practice area has abundant man-made snow, is groomed, and is in excellent for demos, lessons, and just skiing around. Join us for lunch at the Stone Turtle Cafe!

Friday, January 10th, 6:00pm: Live Music with Derek Boik! Join us for an evening of great music, dinner and drinks! Derek is an accomplished acoustical musician who will be playing at the Stone Turtle Cafe, onsite at Cross Country Ski Headquarters. Come out, bring friends, have fun, eat great food and enjoy the music.

Saturday & Sunday, January 11th & 12th:

  • Free Beginner Ski Lesson at 10:30am. Participants will learn the basics of traditional (classic style) XC ski technique, plus hill climbing, descending, turning, and getting up when you fall down! Ski rentals are available at the rental desk on a first-come, first-served basis. Lesson lasts one hour.
  • Also on Saturday, Jan 11th is the Pure Michigan Winter Trails Day! Entering its 28th year, Winter Trails Day invites adults and children for a free Facilities Pass and cross country ski lesson, plus a complimentary hot cocoa and hot dog cookout on the ski trails. Bring your friends and family for a fantastic day on the snow, and discover how fun winter in Northern Michigan can be! *Pre-registration is required. More information and registration form can be found here.
  • Both Days: Bob’s Bean Bomb! Back in the early 2000’s, founder Bob Frye created a culinary concoction that eventually became a legend in the XC ski industry: Bob’s Bean Bomb. He went so far as to sell it to ski shops and specialty markets throughout the country. He has since retired the project, but on occasion, he makes a big batch of it for friends and family… and it never lasts longer than a few minutes. This cheesy, spicy, addictive bean dip is served hot, with sturdy chips. Cold drinks recommended. Available until it sells out!
  • Sunday, Jan 12th: Golden Years Ski School! Intended for both beginners and people who have not skied in many years, the Golden Years Ski School is an introduction (or reintroduction) to the sport of cross country skiing for people aged 55+. articipants will begin the workshop at 10:30 with indoor introductions and instruction, then head outside for an on-snow lesson. They will debrief inside afterwards, and break for lunch in the Stone Turtle Cafe and Day Lodge from 12pm to 1pm. After lunch, from approximately 1pm to 2pm, instructor Jim Bradley will take skiers on a guided ski tour on the XC Ski Headquarters trails. Cost is $55 and includes a full-day ski rental and facilities pass, learn-to-ski workshop, and guided ski tour. Space is limited, sign up here!
