Cross Country Ski Report – Sunday, December 1st

It’s a beautiful, snowy morning in Northern Michigan! We have received about 2 inches of snow, and it continues to fall heavily. We made snow for the last two nights on the practice area, which is progressing towards full coverage with a base of 10-20″. The trails have trace amounts of snow, and are not skiable yet. Depending on the weather, we are tentatively hoping to have the practice area skiable for lessons and demos by next weekend.

Our neighbors to the north in Frederic, Forbush Corner, received upwards of a foot of snow and are grooming, as is Boyne Mountain Nordic, and Michawye in Gaylord, where they’ve received nearly 3 feet of snow so far.

The Stone Turtle Cafe opens for the season on Saturday, December 7th! Get excited for a few new menu items, featuring some delicious, local meats, plenty of veggies, and lots of great flavor. Enjoy a yummy lunch, drinks, and live music Saturday from 1-3pm.

Saturday, Dec 7th – 6:00pm: XC Ski HQ Ski Team Kick-Off Dinner!
The XC Ski HQ Ski Team will kick off the race season this weekend with a team dinner party! We will feast, introduce new and existing team members, discuss the race schedule, and talk strategy for holding onto the Michigan Cup after last season’s nail-biting victory. An entree will be provided. Please bring a dish to pass or a beverage to share. The HQ team is known for its great camaraderie amongst members, and is very welcoming to new members, so if you’re considering racing this season and joining our team, please join us for the team dinner!

Saturday, Dec 14th – 10:30am: Free Beginner Ski Lesson
Learn how to cross country ski at our FREE beginner ski lesson! You will learn the basics of traditional (classic style) XC ski technique, plus hill climbing, descending, and turning. You will even learn how to get up when you fall down! Free lessons are limited to 25 people. Ski rentals are available at the rental desk on a first-come, first-served basis (we do not take rental reservations). The free lesson lasts 1 hour. *Snow permitting.
